STEP 1 - DNA TESTING

Order an autosomal DNA (atDNA) test from one of the three major testing companies.  I recommend testing with AncestryDNA first, then 23andMe.  Upload your DNA raw data to FamilyTreeDNA and MyHeritage (pay the one time fees to unlock all features) and GEDmatch

Gather as much family tree information as possible.  Ask family members for help.  Strive to record full names, places and dates of birth, marriage, death and burial.  Adoptees, ask your adoptive parents (if possible) what they know about your birth parents.  Ask for copies of any records they have retained relevant to your adoption.  Send for "non-identifying information" about your birth parents.

STEP 2 -  GATHER INFORMATION
